Prairie Planting Scheme

Planting that moves, breathes, and evolves.

Prairie planting schemes use flowing drifts of perennials and ornamental grasses to create gardens that look wild, feel alive, and practically maintain themselves.

What is a prairie planting scheme?

A prairie planting scheme takes its inspiration from the wild grasslands of North America, where grasses and perennials grow together in dense, interwoven communities. Pioneered by Dutch designer Piet Oudolf, this approach creates gardens that feel natural, move with the wind, and change beautifully through the seasons.

Instead of rigid blocks of identical plants, prairie schemes use drifts and matrices of carefully selected species. Ornamental grasses like molinia, calamagrostis, and stipa provide structure and movement. Perennials like echinacea, rudbeckia, salvia, and achillea deliver waves of colour from early summer through to autumn.

The result is a garden that looks effortless — but behind that apparent simplicity lies deep horticultural knowledge. Every plant is chosen for its structure, texture, seasonal contribution, and ecological value. The skill lies in making complexity look like nature's own work.

Annual Maintenance

A mature prairie scheme needs cutting back just once a year — in late February. That's the single major task for the entire year.
